In Job 41, Leviathan is described as a powerful sea creature. While it is presented as a physical creature, many Bible teachers also see it as symbolic of God’s greatness and, in prophetic teaching, as a representation of spiritual forces that oppose God’s purposes.
The Serpent Throughout Scripture
From the beginning of Scripture, serpents often represent evil spiritual forces. Satan himself is described as the great dragon.
Isaiah 27:1
“In that day the Lord with His severe sword, great and strong, will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan that twisted serpent; and He will slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
This passage also points to God’s judgment upon the enemies of Israel.
Leviathan and the Forces of Chaos
The Leviathan is often understood as representing chaos, rebellion, and opposition to God’s order.
Psalm 74
Psalm 74 describes God’s victory over chaos and His enemies.
Psalm 74:14
“You crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the wilderness.”
Context
- The temple had been destroyed.
- The enemy was oppressing God’s people.
- God demonstrated His power by defeating Leviathan.
- Leviathan became food for those in the wilderness.
This passage reminds us that no force of chaos is greater than God’s power.
Psalm 104:25–26
“There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small. There the ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which You formed to frolic there.”
Characteristics Commonly Associated with Leviathan
1. Pride and the Lust for Power

“He is king over all the children of pride.”
Many teachers identify pride as the defining characteristic of Leviathan.
How This May Manifest
- Leaders become unteachable.
- Refusal to admit mistakes.
- Power becomes more important than serving people.
- Self-preservation replaces justice.
- Arrogance replaces humility.
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Examples of Pride in Leadership
- “We will be in power until Jesus comes.”
- “The ruling party saved you.”
Reflection
Job asks an important question regarding justice:
“Shall one who hates justice govern?”
2. Twisting the Truth
Leviathan is often associated with distortion rather than outright lies.
This May Include
- Twisting facts.
- Manipulating public opinion.
- Propaganda.
- Half-truths.
- Creating confusion.
- Presenting evil as good and good as evil.
Isaiah 5:20
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”
Reflection
When truth falls in the streets, deception and manipulation become normal.
3. Creating Division
Another commonly taught characteristic of Leviathan is the sowing of division.
This May Appear Through
- Polarization.
- Identity politics that fuel hatred.
- Tribalism.
- Constant conflict.
- Leaders putting themselves before the nation.
- Public servants forgetting they are called to serve.
Whether viewed as spiritual influence or simply human behavior, Scripture consistently warns against sowing discord.

- Repent personally.
- Repent on behalf of the nation.
- Ask God for mercy.

Stand in the authority Christ has given His people.
3. Identify Where Leviathan Operates
Pray specifically over areas where pride, deception, injustice, and division are evident.
4. Use the Sword of the Spirit

Engage in spiritual warfare using:

- The armour of God
